What Lesser Spotted JDM Cars Will Get You Noticed At Local Car Meets?

Not all of us have GT-R money. Some of us are out here refreshing Facebook Marketplace at 11:47pm convincing ourselves that this is the one. The one that “just needs a little TLC” and definitely does not mean three weekends upside down in the driveway questioning our life choices.

The JDM scene online can make it feel like if you’re not driving something with a nut and bolt restoration and a price tag that requires a mortgage advisor, you don’t belong. But here’s the truth nobody shouts about loud enough.

There are some seriously cool, lesser seen Japanese cars that are still affordable, still full of character, and will absolutely get people turning their heads at the petrol station.

Let’s get into it. FIRST UP....

Honda Del Sol

So we couldn't let this little beautiful slip under the radar... especially at the current market!

It’s clean, low, mean, and has that proper 90s Honda vibe where it looks innocent until it’s halfway up the revs and suddenly it’s screaming like the TV licencing company when you've not updated them after 6 month. And the best bit is the VTEC. On the VTi models you’re getting Honda’s 1.6 twin cam VTEC setup, which basically means it behaves nicely down low, then hits that famous changeover and turns into a different animal when you rev it out. The UK VTi spec is often quoted around 157 bhp, which in a light little car like this feels way quicker than it sounds on paper.

Because these are getting rarer and condition varies massively, prices are all over the place, but we have seen these sell in recent months on auction for as little as £2800! But a minter will fetch a pretty penny!
AVERAGE: £5,500

Next up...

Toyota Soarer

You think you understand car presence.... You don’t. Not until you’ve seen a Toyota Soarer glide past you in real life.

Photos do not prepare you. Instagram does not prepare you. Your mate saying “it’s basically a posh Supra” definitely does not prepare you. You genuinely do not understand road presence until you see one in motion. The way the proportions hit. The way it fills a lane.

It just sits low, long, and wide with that effortless 90s Japanese luxury muscle energy. It has that “I was expensive when your favourite car was still in primary school” aura.

And the thing is, most people do not even know what they are looking at. You will get the double take. The squint. The “is that a Supra?” whisper. Meanwhile you’re just cruising by in something rarer, smoother, and arguably cooler with the legendary 2JZ!!!

AVERAGE: £7,500 - £8,000

Next Up!!!

Mitsubishi GTO / 3000GT

This one might genuinely be one of the most overlooked and underrated JDM cars of all time.

A 3.0 V6 twin turbo grand tourer with proper presence, the sort of shape that makes people turn their head and then you remember the real party trick. The technology. For its time it was absolutely stacked,  We are talking things like four wheel drive, four wheel steering, electronically controlled suspension and even active aero depending on spec. That is 90s Japan in full flex mode.

Seriously if you never have... look into these.

AVERAGE: £7,700

NEXT...

1990-1992 Isuzu Impulse

Ahhh be honest then you didn't predict this did you ?? do you even know what this is?? no... shame on YOU!!

Lines that give it a slightly American muscle attitude, but with a definite Japanese precision to the details. It’s like a mini Corvette that spent time in Tokyo.

What makes it even more interesting is what’s under the bonnet. Depending on the trim, you could get a rev happy 1.6L DOHC engine and in the RS models, even a turbocharged version pushing solid power for its weight. Light chassis, tight handling, and that boosty punch made it way more serious than people expected.

It’s rare, a bit quirky, and properly unique. Not many people remember it — which is exactly why it stands out.

AVERAGE: £7,500

Lastly...

1997-2001 Honda Prelude Type-SH

And finally the 1997 to 2001 Honda Prelude Type SH

This is simply a beautiful machine. Clean lines. Low stance. Balanced proportions. It is one of those late nineties Japanese coupes that looks right from every angle without trying too hard. Mature but still sporty.

Under the bonnet sits the 2.2 litre H22A4 VTEC engine making around 200 horsepower. It revs smoothly, pulls hard when VTEC engages, and feels mechanical in the best way. The Type SH also came with ATTS which helped the front end grip and rotate better through corners. For a front wheel drive coupe of its time it was genuinely well engineered.

AVERAGE: £4,500 - £6,000
